Since I posted I have found some small companies that turn around and buy the actual connection from Rogers, the big cable company that also manages the backbone. (Also the biggest news magazine, The Toronto Blue Jays, the Rogers Centre, about 30 other magazines, Canada can get that way.)
Coverage is spotty and, because they don't have any installers, the house that you have has to have already been wired by Rogers or Bell Canada (Ma Bell lives on in Canada, also Esso gas stations.) The prices don't look too bad. Canada can be like that. My bank charges me $1.50 for a withdrawal transaction with a live teller. Deposits are free. There are only five large banks in the whole country but if you dig, you can find a little guy who is free like the US. But I digress..... My usage will also change in that I am watching the evening news on the internet from Canada, and streaming the CBC for hours at a time. I noticed that the internet that comes with McDonalds and motels is very slow, probably because they are paying by the gigabyte, too. They probably have it slowed down to save money.
