Yes, there is fraunhoffer codec that uses VBR, it's inlcuded for example in
Nero burning soft, or music match. But I've heard it's bad, it cuts at
16khz, maybe r3mix.net has some tests of it? LAME's VBR is much better, but
still, high end audio quality is only CBR 256 full stereo....
