As far as I remember, when I played to make Sage compile on top of GMP rather than MPIR, I got failing doctests in the Sage testsuite related to the output of GMP/MPIR xgcd function. So maybe MPIR already switched to the GMP behavior. (But IIRC the tests I ran were on top of GMP 5.something, not 6.something.)
