The usual problem with VMs is MPIR not being able to properly detect the CPU. Sometimes VMs have been known to return an incorrect cpuid.
On the other hand, the usual symptom is a segfault, not a couple of failed tests. Can you tell us what ./config.guess returns in the VM (in the MPIR source tree).
