TransRef, what's inside? 2. TransRef, the vision ____________________________________________________________ 1. TransRef, what's inside? TransRef (www.transref.org) is a reference center for translation professionals with a focus on new technologies and, in particular, CAT (Computer Assisted Translation) tools. TransRef has been created as a public service for the translation community and is sponsored by Atril Software (www.atril.com). TransRef hosts sections on the following issues: - New Technologies. Articles on Optical Character Recognition; Controlled Languages; Dictation Software; standards like TMX, OSCAR, MARTIF, SALT, etc. - Business. Practical issues on translation as a business: payments, rates and contracts. Plus directories of translators and agencies. - Tools. Software Tools for translators including CAT tools, localization tools and a range of utilities for word counting, quoting, etc. - Networking. Staying in touch with the translation community: mailing lists and associations for translators, interpreters and localizers. - Up-to-date. This section features on-line (and off-line) publications; newsletters; plus several calendars of events and congresses for the translation professional. - Research. Focused on the cooperation between people and machines in the task of translation. - Helpdesk. A place to raise new issues, discuss new technologies, share problems and experiences, etc. - Training. How to get training – for students and for professionals who want to stay updated. - Newcomers. A section devoted to translators who want to get started with software tools. - Localization. From a translator's point of view. It includes: tools, mailing lists, associations, training and some first-hand experiences. - And one classic: the Directory of translators and agencies (former Atril Directory) Finally there is a section, The Latest, intended to keep you informed of the latest additions and plans for the site. 2. TransRef, the vision Translation is nowadays a highly technical profession. It is part of sophisticated industrial and commercial processes: it can be an essential marketing tool for companies expanding to new markets; or a competitive advantage to make products culture- and user-friendly. As a result, translation providers are pushed to fit into these processes with high quality assurance standards and tight deadlines. New software tools pop up at a frantic pace to help make these goals achievable. However, meeting deadlines and keeping pace with new technologies is difficult, to say the least. This is where TransRef aims to fill the gap. TransRef keeps you updated about new technologies (CAT tools, dictation software, new standards, etc.); keeps you in touch with new trends through magazines, newsletters, mailing lists, associations, and information about training. Besides, there are specific sections for Newcomers and for Localization, and a Helpdesk to help us stay in touch. And more things to come! 3. Recommended reading We would like to highlight two recommendations for this first issue: a. The section on "Dictation Software and CAT tools" (under "New Technologies"). b. The section on "Localization".
