Just to follow up: I spoke with Kirk at Dish TV (who sounds really bored with his job). He told me thatthe 50 and 721 models have "expansion ports" that resemble serial ports from what he can see. Model 522 also has a USB port.
The thing is, these are all DVR models (which is totally unsurprising). So it looks like I'll be going the IR blaster route. Thanks for your suggestions, guys! Peace, John.
