Well, now we'll find out whether it is or not :-)

That's only half tongue in cheek - this patch was clearly not
appropriate for the patches branches, but it seemed reasonable to try
it on the main development code.  If it proves more trouble than it's
worth, then we can back it out and reject the patch.

But it doesn't seem sensible to leave patches hanging in limbo for
years, because we're too cautious to try them out.

(And yes, I do recognise the irony in the juxtaposition of my last two
postings!)
