I have found these discussions very informative. I have some general
questions. What are the basic components of an ILS? How does LDAP fit into
the ILS if at all and what function does LDAP (presumably a directory
service) perform? Does NetMeeting have a "buddy list" - instant messaging
function independent of using something like ICQ? Finally, can you set up an
ILS (with restricted password entry) on the web where users can log into the
web page, access the ILS and conduct a video conference through the server?
Thanks again for the information. Miles Carlsen.

Are you sure you are not limited by capture device or sound card or CPU or
some other network factor-- benchmarks in the NetMeeting resource kit
indicate peak usage at 900 with averages as high as 790.

I recently received an Alaris quik video wee cam as a result of
joining an isp. I would like to hook it up but am not sure about the
connection. I don't know whether to use a standard parallel port, high
speed parallel port or get an adapter to the USB port on the computer. I am
just getting started with the video aspect of communication and once I do I
would like to get my daughter a video cam as well. I have been using
NetMeeting 3.01 audio and it works well. My operating system is windows 95,
computer is 166 with 32mb ram Any suggestions, you have would be
appreciated.

NetMeeting audio/video is one to one ( the first two in call) unless a
third
party conference server is used.
What you are experiencing is normal and expected behaviour.

What do you mean secure to use? Since all traffic flows unencrypted through
the server there is always a chance that the session can be tapped by
someone with access to the server -- in fact MeetingPoint ( the White Pine
product) has a feature that can allow the operator to eavesdrop on any
conference in progress using the server.

I want to remind you is that most of USB cameras don't work on Win95 because
the camera drivers required on Win95 are different from Win98. Make sure
Alaris quik video wee cam supports Win95 USB before you invest more...

Subject: [NetMeeting] Audio background noise
Dear All,
I am trying to test NetMeeting (3.01) to establish if it can be used
to support research project students from their homes.
I have the system set up at the university and have conducted a few
tests between colleagues. The voice transfer is ok but we get
interference during our conversations.
The interference is a background 'hiss'. This is constant if we switch
off automatic silence detection. If the detection function is enabled
we get the 'hiss' only when we speak.
I would be grateful if I could receive some information on how to deal
with this problem (if at all).
Thanks,
Dr. Arthur Loughran

The receive option is normally greyed unless you are in a call and the other
party is transmitting video.
Do you have the automatically receive video option set in Tools -> Options
Video tab or alternately do you press the play button in a call?
Of course both these options require the other end to be equipped with a
video camera and have the option to send set at their end -- are you sure
the other end is transmitting?

Subject: [NetMeeting] capturing the audio channel
t doesn't seem to be possible to share an application in NetMeeting that
records voice. I presume that's because NetMeeting has the audio channel and
the second application can't get it. Is it possible to take the audio away
from NetMeeting, however briefly, during a meeting, make a recording, and
then have NetMeeting take possession of the channel again? SDK seemed to
indicate not.
I was hoping to be able to use NetMeeting for doing speech therapy at a
distance and wanted to make wav files during the NetMeeting session under
supervision of a clinician for file transfer and evaluation. The codec
modified audio provided by NetMeeting with it's propensity to lose packets
probably is too distorted to do any useful analysis on.
Thanks for any insight, ideas anyone can provide.

Thanks for the quick response... we have suspected that the other end was
having video camera issues ( using a Logitech QuickCam VC on a parallel
switch with the printer). I receive audio from that end, but no video so
far.
