Try setting it for cua1 rather than ttyS1.  The default in RedHat is
to use the cua port designation by default.  Usually...also..the
symptom you describe is one that is indicative of either an irq
conflict....<such as happens when a modem is detectable but responds
slow and throughput is very slow>.   OR you have a bad modem.  Its a
fact of life that windows is more forgiving of hardware errors than
other OS's...to include linux.   I had a recent experience with a USR
sportster external as an example.

  It worked fine within windows95 and 98.  However..when I installed
linix on that particular machine, it was unable to use the modem
correctly.  Linux would detect the modem but I would get *no response*
or when kppp would dial out I would get a ppp connection...but no
throughput...or extremely slow throughput.  Once I replaced the modem,
I had no further problems with that particular box.

So despite everything...you could even have a bad modem..<g>

Try my suggestion above and see what happens.   See if it makes any
difference...It might or might not...but no harm in trying...<g>
