I also have ChanOp experience on IRC, and would happy to lend my services... however, the trick lies in having several (>5) bots that would protect against channel takeovers.  And I don't have a dedicated connection to be able to host bots.

I agree, an IRC room would be a good supplment to a maillist or newsgroup....
