Look in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers, you find a line like this =

:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X

Complete line with -bpp 16 =

:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -bpp 16

You allways start X directly in -bpp 16 at boot with id 5 on /etc/inittab
file.   ;-)
