Continued from previous message...

Downloaded a new ISO image from another FTP site (different from first), burned another CD.  Booted from new CD, removed all partitions, created new partitions (200M swap, 800M /, 1000M /usr, 350M /var, 200M /usr/local - don't ask why I chose these, I'm posting to the newbie group for a reason :) ), formatted all new partitions, selected packages (all except for console and X games, IPX/Netware, and extra documentation), began install.

First try:  quit at about 85% finished package installation with "install exited abnormally - received signal 11 sending termination signals...etc., etc."

Second try:  re-booted, did not re-format - made it all the way through package install BUT, received a brief error just before menu appeared "sh: shared libraries...".  I can't get into the log to read the total message.  The menu that appeared gave me:  error occurred during step "Configure mouse".  Selecting retry does nothing.  Selecting menu|Configure mouse does nothing.  Selecting menu|Configure network allows me to complete the entries, but errors out with "cannot create network device file:  no such file or directory".  Selecting menu|services or timezone does nothing.  Selecting menu|Configure allows me to set up a printer (remote SMB/WinNT).  Configure X, Install bootloader, Configure Authentication does nothing. I cannot Exit install.  Adding unprivileged user yields "install exited abnormally - received signal 11 sending termination signals...etc., etc."

I read the Sig11-FAQ, but when compared with what I see, I don't find an answer.  I neglected to say in my first post that when I began installing yesterday (has it only been two days??) I tried a number of times, and finally got an almost complete install - only X wouldn't work - and I foolishly decided to re-install again.  This box has been performing flawlessly for over two years now, with the last 6 months on Linux.

I apologize for the excessively long post, but felt that more information was better than less in my quest for a solution.

Thanks,

Greg
