I'm not exactly sure how to fix your problem but I found that as root if you do
at the command prompt sync;sync;reboot it avoids lots of problems. So I created
a shell script with that exact line and called it off put it in the /bin
directory and now I set the kdm shutdown button to run that file. To set that go
to the KDE Control Center/Applications/Login Manager and go to the Sessions
tab...you'll see what I'm talking about.
