At the LILO prompt, type "linux 3" This will put you in console mode.
Then go to /etc/inittab and change the default runlevel from 5 to
3. The line is: 
id:5:initdefault:   Change it to read id:3:initdefault:   
and it'll boot to console mode automatically.
