from a root console (or console window) "tar xzvf <packagename>" and
it SHOULD unpack from there into a directory off the current one, so
if you want it off the root directory, you'd best execute the above
command from the root directory, etc.
Then, go into that directory and see if there are any instructions on
how to install from there. Typically, though, you'll compile the
program (make config, make, make install make clean to remove the
binaries from the source directory.)
