I use Kmail as my mail client also... and I too could not set that option..

SO now, I use kbiff... it is a really slick adapation of biff.
It allows you to set a time for interval mail checking...  and is 
pre-setup so that clicking it runs, 'kmail --check'  which opens kmail and
donwloads any new messages.
