[newbie] missing cc on Linux

I installed Linux-Mandrake 6.0 this weekend.  Taking the manual's word at face value, 
I did not change the package list.  Installing packages after the OS came up is easy, 
except for one application I cannot seem to find.  cc.  It is nowhere on the system, 
and I cannot find any reference to cc on the RPM cd.

I've received the gcc package, but still need cc to build it.  Could someone please 
tell me where to find cc and how to install it.
