uhmm how 'bout this.

reinstall it the ususal way ( yeah delete the installation you have 
now )

when install it it only works for root, right? ok.

go into /opt/ ( that's where you are installing it? )
and then do :

chown -R username /opt/OpenOffice.org1.0

( where 'username' is any regular user) and a :

chmod -R +777 /opt/OpenOffice.org1.0

done. try to launch it as user now.
