OK - this is my third attempt to add my 2p worth - maybe it'll get through 
this time (I've posted a few since Friday and none of them made it).

Small comfort, but this is what I said:

Since I have a problem with smartmedia reading, I have done a lot of reading 
this weekend.  I'm sure I remember reading that many CF/SM readers do not 
work off a hub, but do direct from the system box, so there may be nothing 
you can do, other than mount the hub on one of the two backplate outlets and 
the CF reader on the other.
