Not exactly the advice you were looking for, but I recommend you never test X during installation for this very reason: if it crashes, you have to re-install from scratch. Just skip the test and continue with the install. Once it's installed, then you can boot and mess with drakxconf. Then if it crashes, you just reboot and try a different configuration.
