You caught me, et. I have to maintain some M$ workstations, so Samba will be
necessary on the Linux server. I just wasn't sure if the Linux clients (by
version) were going to have to be the same or not. Obviously, the server's
version will be the most current in the hopes of minimizing security issues
it he network.

Next step...wipe out NT 4.0 Server....YIPPEE!!!

you are much better off with each distro's version running on it's
distro....
but you don't need the "overhead" of running samba unless you are connecting
to M$windows boxes (unless you like it of course)
