Maybe this doesn't quite fit, but being one that doesn't trust "default"
installations, I tend to check search paths and the likes - for Mandrake
v9, I went and edited the /etc/profile and included

KDEDIR='/usr'
export KDEDIR

as well as editing my /etc/ld.so.conf

For whatever reason, after the initial installation, and after making
those simple modifications, my KDE ran slightly better without any major
delays in shortcuts or what have you.

Just a thought.
