try to mount the /dev/sda with the partition number 1 -- /dev/sda1 (or try /dev/sdb1 if that doesn't work). All my cardreaders have required that I add a partiton number in the /fstab mount line -- I have no idea why the install never writes /fstab for cardreaders with a partition number.
