How did you find out, I'm intrigued , seems a new problem to me.Dear john, I have found out why my computer hangs. I am missing a file in my /lib/modules/2.4.5 directory called modules.dep What went wrong with my installation process? Greetings wouter pos.
I certainly have a file ,
:/mnt/ext2-vol3/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/modules.dep
seems likely you ought to have one,
and this is a flavour of the content,
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/3rdparty/3c990/3c990.o.gz:
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/3rdparty/3c990fx/3c990fx.o.gz:
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/3rdparty/Portman_PCS/Portman_PCS.o.gz:
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/3rdparty/acecad/acecad.o.gz: /lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/usb/usbcore.o.gz \
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/input/input.o.gz
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/3rdparty/audigy/audigy.o.gz: /lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/ac97_codec.o.gz \
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/soundcore.o.gz
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/3rdparty/bcm5820/bcm5820.o.gz:
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/3rdparty/dc395x_trm/dc395x_trm.o.gz: /lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/scsi/scsi_mod.o.gz
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/3rdparty/dxr3/adv717x.o.gz: /lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/i2c/i2c-core.o.gz
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/3rdparty/dxr3/bt865.o.gz: /lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/i2c/i2c-core.o.gz
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/3rdparty/dxr3/em8300.o.gz: /lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/i2c/i2c-algo-bit.o.gz \
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/soundcore.o.gz
there is tons more like that.
I wonder what it does and what is going wrong,
Anyone on lit got any ideas,
Please don't hesitate,

wouter,
I've been googling on the net with modules.dep
seems like it's a vital file, that lists module dependencies
of modules run at boot time, without one you will not get a boot.
There appears to be an association between modules.dep
and depmod + modprobe commands
man modprobe : high level handling of loadable modules.
man depmod : handles dependency descriptors for loadable
kernel modules
So the question is why has the installer not created a modules.dep for
you , but how did you get onto this, what was the sequence of events.
John
