[newbie] Desktop Question

My windows on KDE or GNOME are too large for the screen.  I have tried every resolution setting but it does not fix the problem.  I have searched documentation and still did not see a fix to this.  I am sure it is a simple setting that I am overlooking but I cannot find it.  In a WinBLows system changing the resolution to a higher setting fixes this problem.  But it does not on my Mandrake 9.0 machine.
