For reference purposes I'd backup the /etc directory (though I wouldn't use the files 
in the new system, adapting the new ones to fit instead), and if you have any server 
configurations and data you may want to back up parts of your /var directory.  It's 
been my experience that it's better to re-install than upgrade as well and that's a 
good choice on your part there.  I'm sure someone else can think of a couple more 
things to back up but those are what I would add.
