I use it on all but 1 of my systems.
This is not an X cure-all.
For me it prevents random and total X lock-ups.

I do agree though that it is not necessary if you are not using the
proprietary nvidia drivers, or in the case of other cards if you are not
using DRI/3d hardware accel
