I use Xine for watching DVDs, but I have been scratching my head about your DVD read troubles. Do you have installed: libdvdcss2? libdvdnav1? libdvdread2? win32-codecs? divx4linux? All of these are necessary depending on the type of DVD it is, and there are likely to be more. This is also a bad time for me, as the house is in boxes as we are moving soon. So I can't find a DVD to play and test mplayer on my machine. Your problem is now cleary the library or driver needed to read the DVD you want.
