I had a similar situation with my samsung drive: drive worked in XP. Couldn't install from it, and after installation (from other drive) linux would lock up when i put a cd in and tried to mount it. The solution for me was to upgrade the firmware. I'm not saying that will work for you, but you might check it. If i run dmesg at the cli, the section for the cdrw is scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices Vendor: SAMSUNG Model: CD-R/RW SW-408B Rev: M300 which does tell me the firmware revision.
