[newbie] Using Xwindows after install

I installed Linux Mandrake for the first time a few weeks ago.  I had it autoload X windows.  When it loaded, the screen res was so low, I couldn't even use it.  I reinstalled it again, but now I don't have it autoload Xwindows, and I can't even figure out how to load it.   Soooooo...two questions.   1) How do you load Xwindows from the text part of Linux.   2) How do you set the screen res in X windows (It was so big that I couldn't even read the whole menu when I right clicked, must of been like 320x480 or so.
