I don't think Gnome is the issue (this stuff is happening at a lower level than the window manager)(and I think upgrading to 2.4 is nontrivial, unless you wait for the mandrake release which has it). Try drilling down through /dev/scsi/. I had /dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/disc and part1 (my CD writer was on host0). To see what was in /var/log/messages, do "cat /var/log/messages", which will put the whole thing into the terminal. Shift-Page-Up to find the bit you need. That power thing sounds like a showstopper -- can you test it on another PC?
