Hmm - I haven't used XP, or W2K in quite a long time, but IIRC netbui 
can be dropped, and the lan configured to run on TCP/IP only.

I think it would save him a lot of pain, and cause no problems 
whatsoever in Windows.  It's even easy to set up on both boxes.
