urpmi is the tool for installing and uninstalling. It takes care of dependencies and a lot of other issues. If you use the gui software installer that is just a front-end for urpmi, so it's doing the same thing. Stick to the gui for now, then read the TWiki page UsingUrpmi when you are ready for it. If you are not sure whether you have something installed, open a console and type urpmq packagename - eg. urpmq webmin If you have it installed it will list the package name for you.
