Well I followed all advice except backing up the system. The result was I screwed up windows and 9.2. The best thing that has happened to me. Windows XP wouldn't reinstall, I also tried windows 98, and 10.0rc1, all wouldn't install. So I reinstalled 9.2 and most everything I was having trouble with suddenly cleared up. I have now reformatted the windows partition to backup and the 10.0rc1 to music and got 9.2 up and running on a 100% windows free machine. Thanks to all.

You have been having fun and games.
You say you tried to reinstall XP and then W98, but failed.
I thought you said you didn't have an XP backup.
W98 you can install from MS installation discs.
But I guess you really want XP back.
It is best to install XP first, that sets up the MBR correctly,
then install M9.2.

Now if you are going to install two linux OS's, namely M9.2+M10.Orc1
then you need a /boot partition (not a boot directory)
Diskdrake can make the /boot partition.

I'm wondering whether the reason you are having trouble
installing XP is because the backup is an OEM equivelent
to a drive image programme and it's looking for the old
XP partition size, and may not be smart enough to resize.
You have been a bit coy about the XP install method.
You must have something in order to reinstall.
I know MS do not hand out proper XP installation discs
like they use to do to ordinary PC owners.
One more reason to escape windblows.
I am guessing you have an OEM XP install with
OEM backup discs, which are not proper installation discs.
Just their equivelent of a drive image programme.
If this is true then wipe the drive, remake the old
partition size and restore XP to it, then get yourself
A good partition programme and resize that new
XP OS down to what you really want.

Then reinstall M9.2 + any others with
a /boot partition, /root partition /home(if you want one)
and a /swap partition and reinstall mandrake.
