The difference between Linux and Windows for the hardware requirements, IMO, depends more on the users needs than the underlying OS. If you are only going to use your Linux box for basic office functions, an old P2 with 256MB will do it, NP. Hell, if you are only doin' server stuff, no GUI, an old Pentium will do, depending on the load you expect.
