I would try the CTRL-ALT-(PLUS KEY) option first.
If the above fails you, I would then do the following (as root):
1)Open your XF86Config file in your favorite text editor
2)be sure you see entries for the 800x600 resolution listed in the file
3)next, I just put a "#" in front of all the 640x480 lines. You may have to
turn off word wrap on your text editor before doing this. This will force
the x-server to use the 800x600 modes.
4)if your x-server fails to start after this procedure, type "linux 3" when
you see the "boot:" line upon startup. This will drop you into a console
session so that you can edit the settings in the XF86Config file. To edit
the file in the console, first go to the directory by typing "cd /etc/X11"
Then type "pico XF86Config" This will load the XF86Config file using a text
editor called pico. After making changes, do a CTRL-X to exit out of pico.
Answer "y" to save the changes.
