In my lan can I assign a fixed ip to one box and leave the
others on dhcp?

Lee; The easiest way to do this is to assign a narrow range of addresses handed out by your dhcp server, and use a static IP address that is not in that range for your machine that needs the static IP.

I usually avoid dhcp as much as possible, but when needed, i only
set my range up so that it can hand out 1 or 2 extra addresses
than I actually need, in case a couple of gamers show up, or I
have to work on a client's PC which would otherwise be directly
connected to the Internet.

That way, I don't have a bunch of extra leases and addresses
running around my network, and I can maintain a large block of
static IP's for everything else.

That makes sense. Narrow the range for dhcp to something over max workstations and assign numbers outside that range. Then as I get around to everyone I can narrow down to just a couple dhcp for laptops, etc.

Thanks

Lee

Lee; N.P. Or like I used to say,

"Trust me! I'm from the Government, I'm here to help!" Grin!
