I've been very happy with Mdk 10 on my desktop machine, once I got a few
initial problems (e.g. sound) ironed out. In fact, none of my
semi-computer-literate friends and family have had the slightest difficulty
using Linux instead of Windoze for day to day tasks (email, word
processing, ...), even though they've never even heard of Linux or even Unix.

So I decided to take the plunge and install it on my old Dell laptop (an
Inspiron 3800). The Win98 on it was thoroughly broken, and I refused to
re-install it, so I backed up the few important files on there and toasted
it. Actually my 13 year old son did it, with just a few pointers.

Install went smoother than on my desktop! It even recognized some laptop
weirdness, like the soundcard doubling as modem. Suspend even seems to work
(hasn't worked on Win98 in over a year - used to hang occasionally, and the
patch from M$ for this just destroyed suspend capability completely; if you
closed the cover everything stayed on and the machine overheated).

Just one obvious problem so far: the whole desktop is shifted up about the
height of the task bar, leaving a grey line across the bottom of the screen,
and chopping the top off. Anyone know how to adjust this?

If my memory isn't failing me, you can use xf86config to adjust this. I think this is the one that lets you fine tune screen settings.
