Thanks Steve and Hoyt for your responses There seemed to be a problem with the generic S3 video card that I had. Even when the X Video test crashed the install (I left it for a half hour and still nothing!) a reboot of the system came up with a working Linux without the X Server. (since I hadn't gotten to the part that asks if I would like to boot into X Server) So far so good. I tried agian with the MCC (Mandrake Control Center) in text mode to configure the video card but none of the settings worked so I changed video cards. All working fine. It is a very generic (and old) PCI video card with no real distinctive markings on it other then the S3 chip (Trio64V2/DX) and SP765 Rev. F over the CE cert. Not too worried about it.
