Kernel updates come generally because of security problems, so you should get the latest kernel anyway. Don't attempt to 'upgrade' the kernel, just install the new one. An additional stanza will be added to lilo.conf and you will be able to select either kernel from lilo, if you do have problems (which is not very likely). Then get the matching source.
