[newbie] Self-booting CD with complete system on CD

Have any of you made a self-booting Linux CD that is totally independent of the 
hard-drive?  It would be useful for catastrophic
failures due to curious inexperienced hands like mine.  Especially if you just want to 
boot up and correct a few files on the
harddrive.
