[newbie] Can't Telnet to Linux-Mandrake Box

I can ping my 6.0 linux box but I cannot telnet to it: whenever I try it
says; connection to
host lost. Is there a setting somewhere I need to change ? I can ping the
box & can browse
the web, so the adapter is working.  Any Ideas
