This is an common problem which can be healed by using the option
sw_cursor in XF86Config:

1) in /etc/inittab set initail runlevel to 3 and reboot
2) in /etc/X11/XF86Config, search for "Device" section, and 
  add "Option sw_cursor" (see "man XF86_SVGA" for details)
3) test by typing "startx"
4) if/when happy set initial runlevel back to 5
