[newbie] x configure

Hey all,
    I'm having trouble installing my external monitor apon the initial
setup.  I've tried different monitor and graphic card combinations and
nothing will work.  I have a micron laptop with a neographics card and
the monitor is an older 15 inch Acer.  The best I'll get is a bunch of
wavy whites lines during the x config test.  Any help will be
appreciated.
