Yes, you can use the scroll wheel in Linux.  First, add the following lines to
your /etc/X11/XF86Config file:
Section  "Pointer"
        Buttons                3
        ZAxisMapping    4 5
End Section

Comment out the lines with the # sign that say 'emulate3buttons' and
'emulate3timeout'

Save your changes then copy the /etc/X11/imwheelrc file to your home directory.

Last, drop a shortcut of /usr/X11R6/bin/imwheel into your autostart folder
using the -k option.
