bascule here again, with yet another problem that is defeating me!

the last version of linux that i tried before mandrake was redhat 6 just
after it came out at that time my partitions were reported as being what
i expected them be from my knowledge of the naming system
i.e. ide drive
first partition(primary)'win98 driveC' =hda1
second partition(primary) 'free space'=hda2
third partition (logical) 'win98 driveE'=hda5
fouth partition (logical) 'win98 driveF'=hda6
fifth partition (logical) /home =hda7

with clearly the whole extended partition holding logical drives being
hda4

similarly the scsi drive
first partition (primary) / =sda1
second partition (primary) 'linux swap space' =sda2
third partition (primary) 'win98 driveD' =sda3
fourth partition (logical) 'win98 driveG' =sda5
fifth partition (logical) 'win98 driveH' =sda6
again the extended partition holding logical drives being sda4

....problem, according to mandrake my first ide partition is hda2!-there
is NO free space before it,
the free space after it is now hda3 and not hda2
the first scsi partition is still sda1 but the second is now sda3! there
is NO free space between the two, the third primary partition is now
sda4 and all the others one number up,

i have checked these drives for problems over and over again as well as
for viruses boot sector and other wise,
does anyone know of any thing that could cause this to happen and what
it may mean?
apart from user permision problems relating to writing to dos partitions
(or should that be vfat?) posted elsewhere i have no problems accessing
these drives
