[newbie] Question about sound cards . . .

Does anyone know how to configure an ALSA sound card?  
When I try to let lothar configure my sound card it says that it can't
configure it because it is an ALSA card.  I tried configuring it with
sndconfig, but I have to enter in values like the DMA and IRQ.  How do I
tell what values they are from linux?  Is there any other way to configure
the sound card?  And what are the ALSA files that come with RPM contrib CD
in the PowerPack?  What are these files used for?
