Jim,
Press ctrl-alt-F1(or 2-6)
it should take you to a virtual terminal
you dont' really have to shutdown X, but if you must either logout or
press ctrl-backspace
and you'll wind up back at the GUI login prompt ( I assume you stsrtx
automatically) from there you can press ctr[-alt-F1 and you'll be in
text mode
