When you boot Mandrake, do you get into the graphical login directly?
If so, press Ctrl-Alt-F2. You'll see a text-login. There should be an
ASCII art penguin, and to the right some text that explans the version
you're running. Press Ctrl-Alt-F7 and you're back in graphics.

If you don't boot into the graphics, you should be able to see this
immediately
