4 GB should be enough for a first time linux installation. 

I would recommend using this partioning:

Swap = size of ram on computer
/boot = 100 Mb
/        = 200 Mb
/usr    = 2,5 Mb
/usr/local = the rest

You do not need much space for users (home) when you are the only user
